If you want to take advantage of rooting your Galaxy Note 3, you will certainly want to install a custom ROM.

Don’t know what custom ROMs can do for you? See What is a Galaxy Note 3 Custom ROM first.

To install a new custom ROM, you will need a rooted Galaxy Note 3 with CWM or TWRP recovery installed.

For this tutorial, I will be using CWM Recovery. To install using TWRP Recovery, please see How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP on Rooted Galaxy Note 3 instead.

Once you have a rooted Galaxy Note 3 with CWM recovery, you are good to go.

Before we start, I highly recommend you make a backup ROM FIRST, see How to Backup/Restore ROM using CWM on Galaxy Note 3!

Step 1. Turn your Galaxy Note 3 off then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 3 seconds until you see “RECOVERY BOOTING” at top left of the screen.

Step 2. Once in CWM Recovery, choose “wipe data/factory reset”.  This will erase all of your settings, apps, app data, and everything except for your personal photos, videos, and files in your internal storage.  (Does not touch external storage.)

(This step is optional if you are installing a custom ROM that is based on the same/newer firmware but I usually recommend to do it unless you are installing an updated version of the same ROM you are running.)

Step 3. Go back to main menu and choose “install zip”.

Step 4. Choose “choose zip from /sdcard” or “choose zip from /external_sd” depending on where you put your ROM zip files.  (/sdcard = internal storage, /external_sd = microSD card)

Step 5. Next browse your file system and file the ROM zip file you want to install and install it.

Step 6. If you need to install more zip files at this point (such as Gapps), you can repeat Steps 4 and 5.

Step 7. Once everything is done, go back to main menu and reboot system.

Step 8. You should see the boot-up animation of your new custom ROM.

Step 9. After 1-5 minutes, you should see your Note 3 has booted up the custom ROM.  If you do see this, congratulations!

If you end up in a bootloop (stays in boot for longer than 10 minutes), you can rebooting in CWM recovery, format /system under Mounts & Storage, then re-install the ROM.  That will usually fix any bootloops.

One of the coolest features on CWM Recovery with a rooted Galaxy Note 3 is the fact that you can backup and restore ROMs.

What does backing up/restoring ROMs mean though?

When you make a backup ROM, it will backup your whole OS including your apps, settings, app data, everything except for contents of your internal storage such as personal photos, videos, and other files.

If you end up in a bootloop while installing a new custom ROM OR perhaps you just want to go back to the previous custom ROM/stock ROM you were on, you can easily restore your backup ROM using CWM recovery.

If you are using TWRP Recovery, please see How to Backup/Restore ROM using TWRP on Rooted Galaxy Note 3 instead.

So, let me show you how to do this.

Step 1. Power off your rooted Note 3.  Then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 3 seconds until you see “RECOVERY BOOTING” in blue at top-left of your screen.

Step 2. Once in CWM Recovery, choose “backup and restore”.

howto-backup-restore-rom-cwm-galaxynote3-2

Step 3. Choose “backup to /sdcard” if you want to backup to your internal storage OR choose “backup to /external_sd” if you want to backup to your microSD card.

Backup should take around 5-10 minutes.

Once backup is done, you are good to go.  They are stored under “clockworkmod/backup” directory on your internal storage or microSD.

Step 4. If anytime you need to restore your backup ROM, simply boot back into CWM recovery.  Then choose “restore from /sdcard” or “restore from external_sd” from Backup and Restore menu.

Step 5. Your backups should be in folders with timestamp.  Choose the backup you want to restore.

(You can also rename the folders to something more easier but make sure you don’t put any spaces when renaming it.  You can use file explorer app like ES File Explorer to change the folder name.)

Step 6. When done restoring, reboot your phone and your Note 3 will be returned to the state it was in when you made the backup ROM.

For those of you who want to return your rooted Galaxy Note 3 back to stock factory status, you can by unrooting your Note 3 with ODIN and stock official firmware.

This will allow you to fully unroot your Galaxy Note 3 and make it just like the day you got the phone.  Also for international models like SM-N900 or SM-N9005, you can use this method to change the country firmware.  E.g. You bought your phone in India and you want to use it in France but your phone doesn’t support French, you can install French firmware on your Indian Note 3.

And for those of you who want to just run stock, I don’t recommend this method (only for warranty/returns) but instead find a rooted stock ROM in ZIP format you can flash using CWM or TWRP recovery, that way you can keep your CWM/TWRP recovery and run stock ROM.

This unroot method may ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE, so please MAKE A BACKUP before proceeding!!!

Step 1. Turn your Note 3 power off.  Then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 5 seconds until you see a warning screen.

Step 2. Hit Volume Up to enter ODIN Download mode and connect a micro-USB cable from your Note 3 to your computer.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-2

Step 3. Go to Galaxy Note 3 stock Firmware page to find your stock firmware for the Note 3 you are using.  Make sure to download the correct firmware!

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-3

Step 4. Once downloaded, unzip the stock firmware and you should find a file ending in .tar.md5.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-4

Step 5. Run ODIN.  If you don’t have ODIN program, download ODIN here and run it.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-5

Step 6. When ODIN program runs, you should see a yellow-highlighted box.  If you don’t see it, trydownloading Samsung USB drivers and install it.  Then re-plug your micro-USB cable.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-6

Step 7. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE but clock on “PDA” button and browse your computer to find the stock firmware you downloaded earlier that ends with “tar.md5″.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-7

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-8

Step 8. Hit “Start” button and let ODIN program install 100% stock official firmware on your Note 3.  This should take around 10-20 minutes.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-9

Step 9. Once done, your phone will reboot and you should see “PASS!” in ODIN program.  If you see this, you did it successfully.  If for some reason you get “FAIL!” and/or you see “firmware encountered error” message on your Note 3, don’t worry and just try running the ODIN program again and re-flash stock firmware until it succeeds.  You may have to try another USB cable or port to make it work right.  If you still have trouble, try using another computer.

Step 10. In this particular case, my phone rebooted and stock firmware was installed but none of my apps/settings/photos/videos were deleted.  In most cases, stock firmwares do erase everything.  Now, if you goal was to just run stock firmware you can stop here.  If you want to totally reset your phone and wipe everything on your phone to return your phone for warranty, keep going.

Step 11. Turn your phone off then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 3 seconds until you see “recovery booting” message at top left.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-13

Step 12. Once in stock recovery, choose “wipe data/factory reset”.  THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE!!!

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-14

Step 13. Choose “Yes”.

howto-unroot-galaxynote3-15

Step 14. Once rebooted, you should see the same welcome message you saw when you bought your Note 3.
