Don’t know what custom ROMs can do for you? See What is a Galaxy Note 3 Custom ROM first.

To install a new custom ROM, you will need a rooted Galaxy Note 3 with CWM or TWRP recovery installed.

For this tutorial I will be using TWRP Recovery to install a new custom ROM.  To install using CWM Recovery, please see How to Install Custom ROM using CWM on Rooted Galaxy Note 3 instead.

Before we start, I highly recommend you make a backup ROM FIRST, see How to Backup/Restore ROM using TWRP on rooted Galaxy Note 3!

Step 1. Turn your Note 3 off.  Then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 3 seconds until you see “RECOVEYR BOOTING” at top-left of your screen.

Step 2. Once in TWRP recovery, choose “Wipe” to wipe data/factory reset.  This will erase all of your settings, apps, and app data.  This will not erase your personal files such as videos, photos, and other files stored in your internal storage or micro-SD card.

*Note – You may be able to skip this step if you are installing a custom ROM that’s based on the same firmware as one you are currently using but for most custom ROMs, I suggest you to do this step.

Step 3. Choose “Install”.

Browse your internal storage or your micro-SD card and find the ROM zip file you are going to install and install it.

Step 4. Once done installing the zip file you can reboot.  If you have more than one zip file to install, you can repeat Step 3.

Step 5. Once rebooted, you should find the welcome screen with your new custom ROM.  If you end up in a bootloop for some reason, you can try rebooting into TWRP recovery, wipe/format /system in advanced wipe menu, then re-install ROM from Step 2.  That will usually boot every ROM unless the ROM itself is bad (sometimes that happens).  If you cannot get out of bootloop for some reason, you can either install another custom ROM or restore your backed up ROM.

If you have a rooted Galaxy Note 3, you have a choice between using CWM or TWRP Recovery, both which do pretty much the same thing to backup, restore, and install ROMs.

Well, if you are not using CWM Recovery to backup/restore ROM, and using TWRP Recovery instead, here’s how to do it easily.

First, you will need a rooted Note 3 with TWRP Recovery installed so see How to Root Galaxy Note 3 first.

If you are using CWM Recovery, please see How to Backup/Restore ROM using CWM on Rooted Galaxy Note 3 instead.

Step 1. Turn off your Note 3 then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 3 seconds until you see “RECOVERY BOOTING” at top left of your screen.

Step 2. Once in TWRP Recovery, simply choose “Backup”.

Step 3. To backup ROM, I suggest you to check ON “Boot”, “System”, and “Data” as shown below.  Also, you can set a Backup Name and choose either Internal Storage or your micro-SD card.

When done setting it up, simply swipe “Swipe to Back Up” to starting backing up ROM.

Step 4. When you ever need to restore a ROM, all you have to do is select “Restore” from main menu in TWRP Recovery.
